Restoring a photo that is now blank and the file says.bak?

This morning I installed a trial photo program. (First mistake.) When trying it out, I added a couple of photo folders. I went back to my “photos” folder and noticed the particular photos were missing.

In place of the photos is a blank file that says .bak. I tried to restore this and apparently I don’t have some registry designation or something like that.

Frankly, I am in a world of trouble here as I cannot buy some program off the internet to restore these files. (My husband refuses to allow me to give out credit card numbers on internet.) Now what?

If you care to help me, please speak in beginner terms with easy steps even your Grandmother could do. (I am someones Grandmother and I am very scared about altering things.

Did a system restore. The photos are still not there.
